Academic English 4
Academic English 4 provides direct entry to undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Curtin Singapore. Students have full access to Curtin Singapore facilities.
Academic English 4 is 13 weeks in duration.
Study skills developed include:
- Writing – students will be able to clearly write academic texts which demonstrate knowledge, control, and accuracy. They will be able to apply knowledge of discourse structure, style, and register in a range of genres. They will synthesise information into a cohesive and convincing argument with supporting evidence. Students will also apply knowledge of academic conventions and academic integrity norms.
- Speaking – Students will respond to tasks with appropriate, structured, and developed discourse. They will be able to use fluent and comprehensible speech, communicating ideas through accurate and controlled use of language. Students will interact appropriately in academic settings and apply knowledge of academic conventions and academic integrity norms.
- Reading – Students will be able to understand the genre and purpose of different text types. They will evaluate converging and contradicting positions and supporting information. Students will also analyse the use of academic conventions.
- Listening – Students will apply knowledge of language systems and discourse to understand a structured lecture. They will explain, compare, and analyse information and interaction from lectures and group discussions. They will generate purposeful notetaking while listening to extended discourse.
Course assessments
Students will be assessed through a combination of examinations and assignments including writing, reading, speaking, and listening. They will also be assessed on work they do outside of class as homework throughout the 13 weeks. Students must obtain at least a 55 per cent pass result in each assessment with a final overall score of 60 per cent.

Class size
Maximum 19 students.
Study Hours
There are 15 contact hours per week in the classroom. Students are also required to do at least 2 hours of study/practice per day outside of class. This additional time consists of homework, assessed assignments, MyStudy Self-Access (via Moodle), and student’s own practice tasks. Classes are held Monday to Friday with lessons scheduled either in the morning or afternoon.
